The statues of the angels seated around the base of Daniel O'Connell's statue have fascinated me since I first laid eyes on them on my first trip to Dublin when I was a child. I feel a special sort of connection to them, not because of any sort of religious feeling they might stir up, but because they have stood witness to history. The hole in the elbow of the angel pictured immediately to the left is the result of a bullet fired during the 1916 Rising. When I am in the very center of Dublin, and lose my bearings, I just look for the angels. Over time they have come to mean a lot to me, and I draw inspiration from them to aid me in the search for the history of my family.

With the help of O'Connell's Angels
