The symbol at the heart of the monolith is a flame-like shape which originates from a bowl similar to a Thurible (or Censer) used to release incense during the Catholic ritual of Absolution for the Dead. The shape spiraling up from the bowl reminds me of the swirling smoke of the incense which emanates from the Thurible when incense is burned.
There is a small 'x' or cross shape on the altar-like mantelpiece near the bottom.
These shapes, reminiscent of Cathedral windows, are carved into both sides of the monument.
